DEAR READERS,

Welcome to my site, designed to inform, engage and connect readers interested in the critical examination of contemporary health issues and events. As a writer, speaker, researcher, performer and professor with many years of experience, I have produced hundreds of publications examining diverse social issues, policies and processes from a sociological perspective. I have presented research findings by way of poetry and reader’s theatre presentations, as well as through more conventional dissemination strategies. I have also mentored numerous researchers in the design and execution of their research and helped them as they have moved on to sharing their knowledge in scientific fora and in various types of creative presentations.

Particularly interested in the Sociology of Medicine, Health and Illness, I have focused the majority of my research, writing, mentoring and presentations on (bio)medicalization, media portrayals of mental and physical health, medical error, and, most recently, the adaptation and wellbeing of refugee populations.

As you peruse my publication history, read personal blog posts on diverse social issues and current events, and connect with me on a variety of online platforms, I hope you will get to know me better, and that my passion for applying a critical lens to the pressing issues affecting our daily lives will resonate with you. Please feel free to connect directly with me via the online platforms linked at the bottom of each page, or by sending me a message from the 'contact' page. Also, check back regularly for new blog posts and publication announcements.

Thank you for taking the time to read about me and my work. Together, we can engage in the critical dialogue required to become more informed and engaged citizens.

Sincerely,
Juanne Nancarrow Clarke

Case Studies in Suffering and Death

Dear Readers,

I just published a book titled When Medicine Goes Awry with University of Toronto Press offering a sociological approach to medical error that results in death and suffering. Medicalization, pharmaceuticalization and the social determinants of health are among explanations I use. The book is based on case studies such as the case of Brian Sinclair an Indigenous man who died after waiting 34 hours in an ER despite the fact that his medical issue was an easily treatable bladder infection.
